How to Choose School Dismissal Software: A Checklist
School dismissal software, sometimes called a dismissal management system, helps staff get students to the right adult and keeps a record of each handoff. Use this checklist to compare products and ask better questions during a demo.
Does it fit your dismissal methods?
Most schools run more than a car line. Check that the system handles every way your students leave:
- Car riders
- Walkers and bike riders
- Bus riders
- After-school programs
Who has to use it?
Some products need every parent to install an app and use it every day. Others are run by staff, and parents only receive information. Ask what happens when a parent does not have the app, or a grandparent comes to pick up a child.
How does it verify a pickup?
Ask to see exactly what staff see when an unknown person arrives. Ask how the school sets authorized pickups and how custody restrictions are handled.
What is the plan when something goes wrong?
- What can staff do if the internet is slow or down?
- How does a same-day dismissal change reach the classroom?
- Who do you call at 2:45 PM if something breaks, and how quickly will they respond?
What records does it keep?
You should be able to see who dismissed which student and when, and to export reports for your administrators. Ask how long the records are kept.
How is student data protected?
Dismissal systems store student names, family contacts and pickup rules. Ask where data is stored, who can access it, how staff roles are controlled and whether the vendor will sign your student data privacy agreement. Public districts may have extra requirements, so involve your technology team early.
What does it take to launch?
- How do you import students and contacts?
- Does it work with your student information system?
- How long does staff training take?
- What help do parents get in the first week?
What is the real cost?
Ask for the full price for your school size, including setup, training, support and any required hardware. If you are a district, ask whether pricing is per school or per student.
Can you test it first?
A demo shows you the best case, while a trial shows you your own afternoon. If you can, test the system with real staff at a real dismissal before you commit.
